Investment firm Actis has launched a new data center platform in Asia.

The company this week announced the launch of Epoch Digital, with a current portfolio under development offering 200MW of IT capacity across three identified projects and more in the pipeline.

Actis said Epoch Digital aims to develop, own, and operate a scalable and geographically diversified portfolio of data centers across markets in Asia where hyperscale customers are growing with imminent demand.

The first project is a 23MW IT capacity data center in the heart of Taipei, Taiwan; the second will support 120MW in capacity in Johor Bahru, Malaysia; and the third development is for a data center in Greater Seoul, South Korea.

Epoch is led by CEO Hak Kiat Chng and COO Pei Ping Lim. Both were previously at Brookfield-owned DCI Data Centers – the former as COO and the latter as director of operations – and Keppel Data Centers before that.

CEO Chng said: “The emergence of generative AI is transforming industries at an unprecedented pace, driving the need for larger data center capacities. This evolution highlights the critical synergy between data center providers and IT tech giants, as they collaborate to support and enhance the infrastructure necessary for this technological revolution. Epoch Digital is well positioned within Asia Pacific in both mature and emerging markets to foster increased collaboration with our partners for this explosive growth potential.”

On Epoch’s website, EMY1 in Malaysia is set to span 103,990 sqm (1.2m sq ft) and go live in Q2 2025. In Taiwan, ETW1 will span 27,450 sqm (295,469 sq ft) across ten stories and is due for service in Q2 2026. The company lists future planned locations in Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, India, and Indonesia.

Thomas Liu, partner, head of Greater China and Asia data centers, real estate at Actis, said: “The launch of Epoch Digital represents an exciting moment for Actis’ data center strategy. Large, global tech hyperscalers are by far the largest drivers of data center demand so it’s key we tailor our offering to those target tenants.”

Liu continued: “As hyperscalers become strained for capacity in mature data markets, they are increasingly turning to Asian growth markets for their needs, where they require cost-effective, decarbonized, and scalable data centers. This is precisely what Epoch Digital is designed to provide and we’re excited to work with Hak Kiat and Pei Ping to deliver this for its customers.”

Owned by General Atlantic, Actis has a number of digital infrastructure investments. As well as acquiring Nabiax’s Latin American data center footprint last year, Actis has previously invested in Chayora in China and Rack Centre in Nigeria. The company also has towers in investments in Europe and South Africa, as well as a number of energy firms.
