The companies confirmed the partnership in a LinkedIn post. The Accra data center is expected to have a capacity of 30MW. Other specifications have not yet been disclosed nor has an estimated date for completion.

Plans to build the data center were first announced in June 2022, following ADC’s announcement in 2021 to invest $500 million into digital infrastructure in ten African countries. ADC, part of the Cassava Technologies group, acquired land for the site in May last year.

The site will be partially funded by the United States government’s International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).

Yen Choi, CEO of Onix Data Centre, said Ghana needed a data center for both sovereign security and to assist the government in achieving its digitization goals, transforming the economy from analog to a digital-based one.

He added the data center in the county would provide data accessibility, even if there were subsea cable disruptions.

Dr. Krishnan Ranganath, regional executive of ADC, said it was crucial for Ghana to have its own data servers, rather than relying on foreign counterparts.

ADC also operates data centers in Nairobi, Kenya, and Lagos, Nigeria. Last year, the company announced plans to expand its portfolio in Kigali, Rwanda; Lome, Togo; and recently broke ground on a solar farm in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Onix Data Centres operates two facilities in West Africa; a 20MW facility in Accra, Ghana; and the second in Dakar, Senegal. The facilities were launched in 2017 and 2023 respectively.

According to Data Center Map, Accra is home to four other data centers operated by MDXi, NITA, IS GH LTD, and PAIX. Logistics real estate firm Agility has also announced plans for a 30MW facility - expandable to 150MW - in the Tema area of Accra.

In May, African cloud and colo provider PAIX Data Centres expanded the capacity of its data center in Accra, Ghana.

At the end of last year, Telecel Group, the major shareholder of Vodafone Ghana, expanded its 4G network in the country.
