Amazon has signed a deal to procure the output of a wind farm in Oregon.
Avangrid, Inc., part of the Iberdrola Group, has announced the signing of a new power purchase agreement (PPA) with Amazon to offtake from a repowered wind farm located in Gilliam County, Oregon.
The Amazon Wind Farm Oregon – aka Leaning Juniper IIA – will have a capacity of 98.4MW generated by 40 turbines.
“We are proud to have signed this agreement with Amazon, a company that shares our commitment to accelerating the global transition to renewable energy,” said Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO. “With projects like this, we are not only supporting Amazon’s climate goals, but creating jobs and contributing to local communities.”
“Amazon is excited to announce our first utility-scale renewable energy project in Oregon,” said Abhishek Sharma, head of energy strategy for Amazon Web Services (AWS).
“The project adds to the 2GW of renewable energy capacity Amazon has already enabled across the western US grid. This has contributed to Amazon being the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy for four years running, and will help Amazon remain on a path to utilizing 100 percent renewable energy for the electricity powering its operations by 2025.”
This is a repowering project – where existing turbines at their end of life are decommissioned and replaced with more efficient models. The facility originally commenced commercial operation in 2011.
Avangrid said it has executed contracts to recycle all turbine blades that will be decommissioned with this project, diverting more than 1,000 tons of mass from landfills.
“Repowering represents a tremendous opportunity for Avangrid to capitalize on benefits from the Inflation Reduction Act,” said Azagra. “Avangrid’s large existing onshore wind fleet will enable many more repowerings like this one over the next decade. In doing so, we take advantage of improving technologies to generate more renewable power more efficiently and extend the positive impact these projects deliver locally.”
Avangrid Networks owns and operates eight electric and natural gas utilities serving customers in New York and New England. Avangrid Renewables owns and operates a portfolio of renewable energy generation facilities across the United States.
Avangrid has previously signed a PPA with Meta in Texas, while parent company Iberdrola has signed PPAs with Amazon for wind and solar capacity in Europe, the US, and Asia-Pacific. Vodafone has also signed PPAs in Europe with the energy firm.
