Claro Peru, an América Móvil subsidiary, has inaugurated the first phase of its data center in Lima, Peru.
The facility was officially launched on December 6 and is a 250 sqm (2,690 sq ft) data center that is Uptime Tier III certified with a capacity for 104 cabinets.
The $50 million data center will be part of parent company América Móvil's global data center network.
“We are a company that invests in the development of the digital economy of companies and organizations in the public and private sector in Peru, being a benchmark in the digital transformation of businesses in the country,” said Humberto Chávez, CEO of América Móvil Peru.
“Peru being part of this [network] is an extremely important milestone in terms of connectivity and the development of technological solutions, in addition to allowing us to have a unique offer and ensure the operation of the service beyond our borders."
The data center has a renewable energy certificate for energy consumption with Luz del Sur, a Peruvian electric power distributor.
The inauguration of the data center was attended by the Minister of Transportation and Communication, Raul Perez Reyes, as well as companies involved in the project including Grupo Carso, Huawei, and Equans.
This week saw Oracle's first Colombian cloud region in the country in Claro Colombia's Bogota facility. According to BNamericas, it is likely that the Lima data center will host an Oracle Cloud region in the near future.
Peru is also home to data centers operated by Canvia, and Actis, among others. Digital infrastructure firm Cirion Technologies broke ground on a 20MW data center in Peru in June 2023.
